Charleston WATERKEEPER® Leads International Effort to Save Our Gulf

Local Organization Creates Campaign to Engage Waterkeeper Alliance in Gulf Coast Recovery Effort

In the midst of this devastating BP oil disaster, it is safe to say that most everyone is concerned with the current plight facing the Gulf Coast. With no clear end in sight, this catastrophe is forcing many of us across the Southeast to question how we will be impacted, and what we are going to do about the situation.

Cyrus Buffum, Executive Director of Charleston Waterkeeper, our local water watchdog organization, has taken the lead to create SaveOurGulf.org, a web-based project aiming to raise funds for fellow Waterkeepers on the front lines throughout the Gulf, and provide real-time, accurate information about what may be the largest environmental and economic disaster in U.S. history.

SaveOurGulf.org is an initiative supported by the Waterkeeper Alliance, an international organization of nearly 200 Waterkeeper programs, to aid in the ongoing efforts of the Lower Missisissippi Riverkeeper, Louisiana Bayoukeeper, Mobile Baykeeper, Emerald Coastkeeper and Apalachicola Riverkeeper, who are working around the clock to provide their firsthand knowledge and expertise in order to help minimize the environmental impact from the oil disaster. Together with the Waterkeeper Alliance, Buffum and the five Gulf Coast Waterkeeper organizations located in the direct impact zone are updating SaveOurGulf.org daily with accurate and original content to assure that citizens around the world are given a firsthand account of what is happening on the ground.

Utilizing social media tools and innovative fundraising ideas, SaveOurGulf.org gives citizens opportunities to help contribute to crisis efforts. Interactive components, such as live Twitter feeds from the Waterkeepers on scene, aerial photographs of ground zero, maps and firsthand accounts of critical incidents, allow people to receive live, unfiltered content from the front lines. In addition, by using tools like RT2Give, a donation tool allowing users to donate to the relief effort with a simple retweet on Twitter, SaveOurGulf.org is an example of how modern communication can aid in crisis relief.

The Waterkeeper Alliance has mobilized their programs worldwide to assist, advise and aid SaveOurGulf.org and the affected Waterkeepers. Waterkeepers serve as the voice of the world’s waters, and during such a disastrous event, Gulf Waterkeepers are working together to best protect their communities and the waterways on which they depend. SaveOurGulf.org shares these efforts with the rest of the world, and reveals a front-line perspective of what is being done on the ground.

For those who are not familiar, fractional yachting is similar to a time share. Members have seven guaranteed uses per month, plus as-available use. WindPath not only allows access to the water, but also removes nearly all of the hassles associated with boat ownership.

We've been busy girls the last few weeks. Taking part in some of Charleston's quintessential springtime events has been just what we needed to get over the February blues. Instead of a To Do list, we wanted to recap what's been going on in the life of McKay recently. We wish you a happy Easter/Spring Break week and hope that you will be with family & friends and able to just enjoy! Cheers!

Gullah singers serenaded the first visitors to the Charleston Wine + Food Festival (March 4-7) and the Sneak Preview of the 2010 Culinary Village. The music was a perfect pairing to the Festival's kick-off in Marion Square. We especially loved the joggling board and authentic wares.

"Rice & Beans" artwork displayed the likeness of local, acclaimed Chef Mike Lata, FIG, in addition to other recognizable locals. Proceeds from the silent auction items benefitted the Wine + Food Festival's signature charity, Louie's Kids, a local non-profit organization that helps to fight childhood obesity nationwide.

This year's Bubbles & Sweets...With a Twist! was a veritable candy land under the main tent in Marion Square. Inspired by everything sweet (and bubbly), local and national pastry chefs served desserts that included everything from bubble gum ice cream, candied apple turnovers to chocolate three-ways. The crowd danced enthusiastically to local live band, Hot Sauce, a new addition to this year's Bubbles which has previously been deejayed. We were in heaven!

We were happy to be involved again with Charleston Waterkeeper, Cyrus Buffum, and his organization's first annual Water Ball, held March 27th at the S.C. Aquarium. With more than 300 guests in attendance, the Water Ball more than met its goal of educating and involving more of the local public in our fight for clean water. We are proud to be involved with this group of amazing individuals, and really can't wait to see what will be next!

We were up early this past Saturday morning, getting ready for the Cooper River Bridge Run from both directions! Mackenzie coordinated Team BANa runners at the Start, while Elizabeth waited at the Finish, armed with thousands of BANa to give to thirsty, depleted runners and walkers.

BANa [Serious Rehydration] also took part in the two-day Expo held at the Gaillard Auditorium, educating and informing the public about the benefits of BANa to serious athletes and beyond.

Team BANa runners celebrated "getting over it" and the completion of their 6.2 miles. BANa hosted an [After-Run] Party for Team BANa runners, walkers, supporters, family and friends above The Smoking Lamp across from the Finish Festival, overlooking Marion Square. It could have been warmer, but the company could not have been better. We are so excited for BANa and the great opportunities that are sure to come. Up next - Family Circle Cup! Last night at the Upper King Design District's Fall Design Walk, the transformation was all the more obvious. Emerging and existing shops kept their doors open a few hours late to let patrons browse their selection or services with complimentary beverages and tasty hors d'oeuvres.

Locals Get a 'Taste' of Charleston Delivers

Last Sunday, McKay Freelance represented Charleston Delivers at Boone Hall Plantation's Taste of Charleston. Thousands of locals from around the Lowcountry came out in celebration of their coveted local cuisine and nationally renowned chefs. As "Friends of the Taste", what we found is that Charleston LOVES the idea of a delivery service that offers a timely, convenient solution to their lunch and dinner dilemmas. There was no better forum to educate the community about the services of Charleston Delivers and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Anniversaries are generally a time of reflection, recognition and celebration of growth; however, Charleston Waterkeeper chooses to observe their one-year anniversary a bit differently. Last Wednesday, September 16, 2009, Charleston Waterkeeper launched their Water the Future (WTF) campaign: an invitation to every citizen in the tri-county area to celebrate the importance of our waterways while standing together to see that they are protected.

"The past 12 months have been a soft introduction to the organization and while we have made a great deal of progress, there is still so much that needs to be done, so many people, we need to reach," explains Cyrus Buffum, Executive Director of Charleston Waterkeeper, " When you find out that 100% of our waterways are considered impaired by various forms of pollution, it makes you think 'WTF Charleston'?"

The public is encourage to Water the Future in three different ways:

1. Share photographs of our waterways - the good, the bad and the ugly. In order to stand to protect our waterways, it is first essential for the community to see the two faces of our waterways: the beautiful and the impaired. Submit entries to wtf@charlestonwaterkeeper.org.

2. Join Charleston Waterkeeper by becoming a member. The stronger the community working to improve the quality of our waterways, the greater the impact will be.

3. Spread the word. Water is the common thread that links every individual together throughout our diverse commumities. It is essential that we preserve and protect the quality of our waterways for this generation and for future generations to enjoy.
